About Building Bridges
Starting school is a big transition for a child, as well as their families. As a parent, you hope that when school begins, your child will be able to confidently navigate their way through unfamiliar surroundings, and be able to engage meaningfully in lessons, activities and social settings.
Before a child can do so, however, they need to develop the skills necessary. This includes everything from the endurance to sit upright for an entire school day, to self-help skills such as opening lunch boxes and independent toileting.
They should also understand their responsibility for personal belongings, be able to follow routines and adhere to school rules, as well as understand and manage difficult emotions on those challenging school days. For some children, however, these areas could be particularly challenging.
